Review: Squires sugarpaste from the Cake Decorating Store

So apologies again for the lateness of this blog post but there's been a lot going on this end.

First of all I would like to start by saying a big thank you to the Cake Decorating Store who kindly asked me to review their new range of Squires Kitchen sugarpaste. Here is the link to the overall sugarpaste collections:

http://www.cakedecoratingstore.co.uk/coloured-sugarpaste/

They very kindly sent me some free samples to try out and review for them, they sent me Cosmic blue, Bridal rose and Mocha Cream.

Here is a link to one of the colours http://www.cakedecoratingstore.co.uk/squires-kitchen-sugarpaste-bridal-rose.html

First impressions were that the colours are lovely, very vivid and different from the normal bog standard colours you see, and for £1.99 for 250g I think they are very good value for money.

I had a variety of different projects I used the sugarpaste for over a couple of weeks which gave me a good opportunity to use it several times. I found it easy to roll and handle and only minimal amount of cornflour was needed to stop it sticking to my worktop. When I was done I wrapped it back up in the packet and put it in a sandwich bag and sealed it, it kept really well from one week to the next and there was no noticeable different when I rolled it out again unlike some other brands I have used that have dried up or changed colour slightly - another plus for the squires sugarpaste.

In conclusion I thoroughly recommend the new Squires Sugarpaste range and I will certainly be using it again in the future, many thanks to the Cake Decorating Store :-)

Check out the pictures below to see some of the projects I used this sugarpaste on.

Firstly a couple of (not great pictures!!) pictures from a family fun day where we took 100 cupcakes all decorated differently. I used the squires sugarpaste to make sea monsters, dinosaurs and a very happy pig rolling in chocolate mud.

My personal favourite!

Next up was an order of 6 "carp" themed fish cupcakes. Again the carp were made from the squires sugarpaste

Close up of one of the carp

A 16th birthday cake giant cupcake decorated with the pink squires sugarpaste and some purple which I coloured using Wilton colours and white Satin Ice icing

Lastly a construction themed cake for a roof truss designer. Both the green grass base and the red house base are vanilla cake with vanilla icing and then the roof trusses were constructed (with some help from my husband for the logistics of it) using squires sugarpaste.

I hope you have enjoyed looking at my review and the projects I used them for and that maybe this will inspire you to get creative in the kitchen! Until next time, happy baking.

New York, New York

Okay so its been a very busy couple of weeks -  I have been snowed under making fondant figures for my brothers 21st birthday cake but it turned out pretty good in the end!!

I don't have an edible printer so I sent the signs in to the lovely people at http://www.edibleprints.co.uk who printed them for me and they did a great job.

The fondant figures included:
Statue of Liberty
Tiffanies box
Apple
Hot dog
Big Brown bag
Sex and the city style martini glass
New York cabs
American flag

The New York skyline was cut out by hand from black flower paste.

Exciting news:
The lovely people at http://www.cakedecoratingstore.co.uk/ have asked if I will review some of their new products so keep your eyes open for my future blog posts trying out what they have to offer!

I loved making the little cowboy hat and rope.

And a nostalgic look back at days gone by, vanilla cupcakes made to look like the Mr Whippy ice creams complete with flake and Oreo cookie flavoured butter cream with Oreo cookie topping - possibly my favourite buttercream flavour so far.

Harry Potter

As a HUGE Harry Potter fan I thought it was about time that I shared some Harry Potter cupcakes with you all.

From top left - Golden snitch, Hedwig, nimbus 2000 broomstick, Harrys wand and glasses, Sorting hat, Griffindor scarf.

I also had a play with a 6 cupcake series of owl silhouette cupcakes and I am quite chuffed with the way they turned out.

Lastly for this week I made "luggage tag" cookies, thinking ahead these would be great as placemarkers/favours for a wedding or just as a tag to jazz up a birthday present. Tasty yummy aswell.

That's all for this week! Happy baking.

Owls, Fish and Toadstools

Another busy weekend baking, 3 cakes and 2 batches of cupcakes along with countless fondant figures and some fondant covered cookies which I will upload later when I finish them.

An old one I found on the computer - Mickeys hat in the Fantasia 2000 film.

Coffee cake with chocolate sprinkles for the inlaws

A birthday cake with bunting around the outside and pretty flowers on top for a colleague at work. Got to play with my new gumpaste mould to make the bunting, turned out to be much easier than I thought.

My favourite cake of the weekend, using up left over fondant, cake and buttercream from the weekends baking, a simple but elegant owl cake with handmade fondant owls.

I absolutely love these little spring time cupcakes, I baked them in silicone flower pot cases and all the figures on top are handmade in fondant. My favourites are the toadstools which really look to good to eat!

Last but not least..

Handmade fishing cupcakes - fondant fish, rods, sharks and worms on hooks.

Busy busy weekend! Until next time, happy baking.

This weekends offerings

Second post in one weekend and I think I'm getting the hang of blogging :-)

Been a busy bee this weekend having fun with cupcakes.

I love this gorgeous trio of cupcakes, I had great fun making the bees and I think they turned out great. Close up below:

Continuing the spring theme with this pretty pink butterfly in a garden of flowers.(above)
And 2 more butterfly cupcakes, simple and elegant (below)

1 chocolate and 2 vanilla buttercream roses with fondant flowers. I must admit that the pink one is my favourite:

This group of 4 pretty girlie cupcakes are perfect with a nice cold drink out in the sunshine.

And these ones are for the chocoholic in the family.

My second favourite cupcake of the day:

                                                                   Monster!!!!!

To end the day - a little early maybe but gorgeous none the less - Christmas Penguins

That's all for this weekend, so until next time - happy baking!!
